Further investigation into this deviation revealed that on May 5th, the Five Boro Bike Tour took place. This annual event draws thousands of cyclists, causing a sudden surge in cycling activity. This surge in activity explained the deviation in the data. The bike counter on the Queensboro Bridge only counted bicycles in the designated bike lane, while Strava Metro captured data from across the entire bridge. Therefore, the bike counter data failed to account for the increased cycling activity outside the bike lane during the event. To improve the correlation between the datasets, we decided to remove the data from May 5th, thereby eliminating the outlier caused by the Five Boro Bike Tour. After this adjustment, the correlation between the Strava Metro data and bike counter data for the Queensboro Bridge improved significantly, aligning with the other three bridges. This analysis highlights the importance of identifying outliers in big data analysis.
